Avatar: A New Personification of a Familiar Idea

Wow!  I went to see Avatar this week … truly a life changing movie for me.

I don’t want to give away any of the details but as I sat in my seat with the credits rolling down the screen tears swiftly began rolling down my face.    I reflected on how the masses are viewing this movie and how the culture is open and receptive to the changes in our midst.   I was so moved as I thought about the part we play in our future that tears kept flowing down my face and sobbing soon began.  My friend that joined me asked if I was ok.  “Yes”, I told her, “These are tears of pure joy”.  I was awestruck by the difference made by a few committed individuals who made a decision to make a difference.

Why have I made this the topic of today’s blog?    In that moment of credits rolling,  I felt a more compelling commitment to make a difference as a steward of Socially Responsible Investing …  I walked out of that movie even more invigorated around the work that I do and the work of so many of you.    We are educators of a movement that is growing with such acceleration.  For this commitment I say a big THANK YOU!

The movies that are popular are changing.  Of course, the special effects are drawing some people in initially but the message is unmistakable … it is loud and clear.  People are attending this movie multiple times to sit in the essence of this movie … to see, feel, hear and live this message in the fullness of the big screen.  Remarkable!!!

After experiencing Avatar, I decided to look online to find the official definition of the word “Avatar”.  I found many definitions but the one that really stood out for me was by Wordnet.

When I look at the evolution of Socially Responsible Investing I see a new personification of a familiar idea.   Socially Responsible Investing has been around for centuries in so many forms but now it is taking flight as it swiftly moves into the mainstream just as Avatar is history in the making as it hits the big screen.  It is our job to help others understand the true impact of the choices we make each and every day with our money and with our lives.

Getting Started

Getting started … what a perfect topic for this first ominous entry.

It seems appropriate that my first blog entry be focused on that step which is often the most challenging in any new venture – the first one. Even with this blog. I have considered writing a blog for years and never seemed to get around to it. Until today, of course … and now all future entries shall be easier as a result. Whew! What a relief to take that first step.
